So I hadn’t yet come out to my mum and today I got home to see that someone had changed the cover on my bed to this
And then I saw that they left a note on the bed, so I went over to take a look at it and
My mum is the best
Whenever I see this I think well what if you weren’t gay and you came home one day to this
Joan Rivers was an icon, a legend and a truly remarkable woman. She paved the way for female comedians and inspired many, without her there wouldn’t be Kathy Griffin, Ellen DeGeneres and the likes. Joan truly was a pioneer.
Although many people are going to remember her for being a sharp tongued and mean, but it was her no-holds barred humor was what made Joan stand out. Joan was one of a kind and dared to say things no one else dared. Joan supported many different causes and charities in her life, but many people often see pass those things and take aim at the things she say. Joan was a good hearted person, which was very apparent in her reality TV show Joan&Melissa.
The things she said, while sometimes controversial, made everyone laugh. Joan dedicated her life to her art, she said many times that she enjoyed making people laugh. There are many people who met Joan who have said she was a very nice lady, someone even said that after tapping Fashion Police, while everyone went back into the dressing rooms, Joan would sit in the audience and chat with the audience members. This is the side of Joan that not many people knew, the media would often publish her more controversial words, but this side of Joan, a humble and kind lady was very often ignored by the media.
Reading Kathy Griffin’s tribute to Joan, she said Joan didn’t care what people think of her:
"How do you deal with the fact that you’re a nice, generous woman but are thought of as this mean comic? Doesn’t it drive you crazy?"
"Why would I care about that? Those people don’t know me. As long as they’re laughing, that’s all I care about. Also, if they think I’m mean, maybe it’s good for my career."
All Joan cared about was making people laugh, and if someone can still say that her passing is “karma”, they clearly didn’t bother taking the time to know who Joan Rivers truly was.
Watching her, be it on Joan&Melissa, Fashion Police, In Bed With Joan or any of her stand ups, it was an instant mood lift. Her humor was splendid and never failed in lifting my mood.
The death of Joan Rivers has left a void in my life. She was my go to for a mood lift, she would captivate me through my computer/TV screens. I admired her dedication to her craft, her dedication to making people laugh and her dedication to her family. I can only hope to be able to hustle as much as she has. Even at 81 she was still going strong, and it was so clear she loved, and enjoyed, what she was doing. I am still trying to come to terms with the news. My heart is heavy, and I am truly devastated by the passing of Joan Rivers. The world today has lost some light and laughter.
Love her or hate her, there is no denying she brought so many people so much joy.
A true comedic icon and legend, and a truly remarkable human being. Joan will always be the legendary funny woman. There will never be another.
Rest In Peace Joan, you will be dearly missed.
"I have become my own version of an optimist. If I can’t make it through one door, I’ll go through another door - or I’ll make a door. Something terrific will come no matter how dark the present" - Joan Rivers
